Dear Station Members,

During a recent visit to SCAU to select the trees for climbing & rigging demonstration on May 19, 2013, the Station Manager (SM) came across a team of professional tree workers cutting down trees in the campus. The SM spent half an hour to study their work & talked to them on their experience. He also took some photos of their dressing code & their work.

The SM saw a gang of tree crew all age over 40. The headman told the SM that they have all been working previously as loggers to take down trees in the mountains for firewood & furniture. That is also where they learned to use the chainsaw. Looking at their chainsaw, it was a famous European brand of fine quality. However, the workers did tell the SM that they have found the chain brake a useless nuisance to obscure visibility at the cutting bar. Good on them.

In inspecting their removal techniques, the SM saw the face notch was opened up only inches form the ground. This is an apparent act to try to cut as low as possible in one action, so that the crew does not have to spend time for several cuts by sections to take down the tree. The notch was only around 3 inches wide at the largest opening, & it was cut in at about 1/4 of the diameter of the trunk.

In their performance of a back cut, what intrigued the SM most was that instead of cutting at the opposite end of the notch to form a hinge to let the tree fall by its own weight, the crew were cutting alongside the side of the notch to edge towards the opposite end ! This is most confusing to the SM & he did ask why. Then the crew told him that "this is a safer practice".

When the SM asked how long they had spent on making the notch with the chainsaw so far. The reply was already half an hour. They intended to take down the tree in the next hour or so.

Since the SM was in a hurry to select the demonstration trees, he did not stay long with this professional tree crew of Guangzhou. The SM bid them good luck & safe work always, & then departed with his search.

China has a long way to go to compare with the world to do tree work. It is a different world out there to western practices. This is what our Station facing every time.

Our Station (ISA HK/China now & China Arborist Association in future) will continue to bring in proper tree education with comparison to our territory. One day we will succeed.

best regards,
